Play for Purpose: When Lottery meets Charity

Lottery and charity may sound like they are at opposite poles.  Lottery is often associated with leisure for self-gratification, while charity is about lending a helping hand to others who are in need.  However, when people aim for a deeper purpose, lottery and charity can meet in middle.

50-50 Foundation, an ACNC registered charity, has found a way to make lottery and charity work together to achieve a common goal.  The foundation founded an Australian online charity lottery called Play for Purpose.  With the aim of supporting good causes while delivering great prizes, Play for Purpose is an innovative solution that rewards both supporters and charities.

Play while helping a chosen cause

Play For Purpose gives supporters the chance to win amazing prizes while raising funds for trusted and innovative Australian charities.  As a not-for-profit game, Play for Purpose guarantees that $15 from every $25 ticket bought goes directly to the player’s chosen charity. The player also has the chance to share in $1,000,000 worth of prizes.

Better than commission-based fundraising

Since 60% of each ticket price goes directly to the chosen cause of the player, giving donations through Play for Purpose is a better idea than coursing donations to commission-based agencies who conduct face-to-face fundraising.  Costs like salaries of the staff can take a large portion of the money donated through an agency.

Transparency in Donations

At Auditing for Good we believe that donors have the right to know how much of the money truly goes to their preferred beneficiaries. When donating through charity agencies, this is not clear and donors need to do research, like checking the charity’s annual report, to confirm how much of the donation has reached the beneficiaries.  The good thing about Play for Purpose is that the donor is aware from the very start of the specific amount of donation that will benefit the chosen cause.
